Healthplus.ai welcomes BVP and Noso capital as new investor, to help surgical teams predict post-operative infection risk with AI
The company's CE-certified, AI-powered PERISCOPE® platform predicts postoperative infection risk inside the clinical workflow, helping hospitals recognise a costly and often deadly complication earlier. It is the first step of proactively managing all surgical risks and patients.
Healthplus.ai B.V., a Dutch health technology company enabling proactive surgical care, has extended its seed round. New investors BVP and Noso Capital join alongside existing seed backers LumoLabs, Elevating Capital, Pathena and ROM InWest. The company's CE-certified PERISCOPE® platform uses AI to predict postoperative infection at the point of care, turning the electronic health record from a log of what has already happened into an early warning of what is coming.
Healthplus.ai has developed PERISCOPE®: an AI-based Software as a Medical Device that reads the data a hospital already holds. It predicts, for each individual patient, the risk of a clinically relevant infection up to thirty days after surgery. PERISCOPE® sits inside the existing clinical workflow and requires no new data entry. Its predictions are explained, so that care professionals can see who to monitor closely and who can be safely discharged. The new investment by BVP brings the total seed round to EUR 3.3M. It will support the continued rollout of PERISCOPE® across hospitals in Europe, further expansion of the product and complications it can treat, and the company's path toward FDA approval in the United States, beginning with a multi-center clinical trial.
Investing in proactive surgical care
Surgery is one of medicine's great achievements. Every day, operations that would have been unthinkable a generation ago are performed safely, and patients recover from conditions that once would have been fatal. Yet the same system that routinely delivers the extraordinary still fails patients in ordinary, foreseeable ways, and that gap is especially clear in what happens after surgery. Postoperative infection, one of the most common and most costly complications in surgery, is still recognised late, long after the first data needed to see it coming is already sitting in the hospital.
Patients are harmed by events that could often be prevented: between 17 and 25 percent of surgical patients develop an infection, these infections are recognised on average only around the 7th day after surgery, and complications after surgery rank among the leading causes of death worldwide. But the cost of that delay is not carried by patients alone. Clinicians face data overload, making thousands of entries a day across the electronic health record and frequently deciding on the basis of incomplete information. Health systems absorb the cost and the lost capacity, at a time of tightening budgets and worsening staff shortages.
Clinical decision support has historically struggled to earn the trust of physicians, too often generating alerts that are ignored. Healthplus.ai was built to clear that bar. PERISCOPE® is re-calibrated and validated to each hospital's own data, delivers an explanation alongside every prediction, and integrates natively into the workflow, so that clinicians receive an accurate and actionable signal rather than another alarm. Its models have been trained on more than one million patient records and reach a negative predictive value above 98 percent, well beyond biomarkers, statistical scores or clinical judgement alone, and its results have been documented in peer-reviewed publications. The company was founded by Bart Geerts, an anaesthetist-intensivist and clinical pharmacologist who met the problem at the bedside and had previously helped develop AI-based medical devices.
